Music Teachers Association of Bowie

Supporting teachers and enriching the musical lives of students since 1968.

MTAB is a local chapter of the Maryland State Music Teachers Association (MSMTA) and the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA)

Serving music students for more than 40 years

MTAB formed in 1968 and for decades has been a resource for teachers and students in the Bowie area. Teachers who join this chapter become part of a community of supportive colleagues who learn from one another to become the best teachers we can be for our students in an ever-changing landscape of independent music instruction in the 21st century.

Every teacher has their own style and priorities, but each of us wants to equip our students to learn to love music, play with competence and confidence, and develop important life skills that are learned uniquely through mastery of an instrument. If that is something important to you, we invite you to join with us!

Membership Benefits

Teacher Resources

A collegial association of teachers who support and learn from one another. Occasional workshops, masterclasses, and performances help us continually hone our craft. We meet in person at Village Baptist Church in September & March, and virtually in April. Twice per year, we have a casual luncheon.

Non-competitive events

Three yearly non-competitive events (1 with a judge) create performance opportunities for all ages and levels. Those with students not interested in or ready for competitions can still participate in our annual Harvest Festival recital, December Ensemble Festival, or judged evaluation.

Judged Competitions

We host one or two annual events in the spring where students receive monetary prizes. While such events carry a higher demand, there is enormous benefit to learning and preparing pieces at a high level. Winners perform at a recital for the other teachers in the association. High School Seniors have the opportunity to participate in an event just for them in spring with a larger money prize.
